Tiger Woods to Take Indefinite Break From Golf

Asking for understanding from fans, business partners and PGA Tour players, Tiger Woods says he is stepping away from golf indefinitely to rebuild his life.

In a statement released Friday evening, Woods acknowledged his infidelity for the first time. In brief past comments, he admitted only vague “transgressions.”

The world’s top-ranked golfer has not been seen in public since smashing his SUV into a neighbor’s tree in an early morning accident on November 27.

He injured more than his face in that car crash.

A flood of reports linking him to a long list of mistresses have dominated news and demolished the reputation of the planet’s most famous, successful athlete.

The text of Tiger’s statement, issued on his official site and announcing his decision to take a break from the sport he has revolutionized, appears below:

“I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children … I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness.

It may not be possible to repair the damage I’ve done, but I will do my best to try.

I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for understanding.

What’s most important now is that my family has the time, privacy, and safe haven we will need for personal healing. After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf.

I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.

Again, I ask for privacy for my family and I am especially grateful for all those who have offered compassion and concern during this difficult period.”
