More Hotel Safety Tips For Kids

In all the excitement of the vacation, make sure you teach your kids some basic safety steps, so your holiday doesn’t turn into a nightmare. 

  • They absolutely cannot open the door on their own, and go traipsing down the hallway. 
  • They must not open the door without checking with you first. 
  • The “don’t talk to strangers” rule applies to hotels too.
  • No matter how safe and friendly the staff seems, don’t let anyone to take them get too friendly with them.   .

Make sure that your room is free from the umpteen hazards that lurk in hotel rooms. Check to make sure curtain cords are tucked safely out of reach.  These can pose a danger of strangulation for younger kids.

In the bathroom, keep smaller bottles of shampoos and lotions on a higher shelf.  

Remember to test the hot water in the hotel bathroom. Many hotels have very hot water that can burn or scald a child.  At the least you will be able to make sure your child doesn’t go into the bathroom alone, or for older kids, you can warn them about the water.

If your kids are small enough to be sharing the room with you, make sure you don’t take out your prescription medicines, and arrange them on your bathroom shelf right next to the sink like you do at home.  New surroundings mean no rules; all medicines go onto a top shelf.

If your kids are older, make sure they know where the fire exits are.  It’s one of the most important things to do when you’re in unfamiliar surroundings. Many parents ignore this vital information, and it can have dangerous consequences.

Make sure your kids don’t use the phone to make calls. Hotels are notorious for adding hefty charges to any phone calls you make. 

Not all hotels will have safe cribs, especially if you’re traveling abroad.  Check beforehand to make sure that your hotel crib meets the standard safety requirements of American cribs.

It’s easy to ignore safety rules and precautions in all the joy and excitement of a holiday.  A little care and some caution will make your trip a safe and hassle free one for the whole family.

Make Your Hotel Room More Child Friendly With the Right Gear

A hotel room can seem like a strange and uncomfortable place especially to younger kids who like routine, and might not share their older siblings’ enthusiasm for new places and surroundings. Try to make the room seem as much like home as possible to get kids to settle in.

A favorite blanket or a stuffed toy that she sleeps with every night is an absolute must.

See if you can take a couple of small things from her bedroom to place in the hotel room - family pictures, perhaps.

While making reservations, ask if you can have a room that’s away from the noise and the streets. Flashing headlights, vehicle noises and street conversations can make getting your child to sleep a nightmare. A room at the back of the hotel that’s quieter and darker might not have a great view, but if it helps your child sleep soundly, it’s worth it.

Once you get to the room, check if the nightlights work. They absolutely should, and if they don’t let the staff know immediately, so they can fix or replace it before your bedtime. Keep the light on to help your child find his way to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Keep the bathroom light on too, so he’s spared the trouble of looking for the switch.

Alternatively, you can take along two flashlights. Leave them by your bedside table, so your child can use it to make his way around the room, while you can use the other one as an emergency spare.

If you’re uncomfortable about having two lights on at night, buy a couple of chemical light sticks; these are easily available at camping supply stores. All you have to do is shake them, and they give off a bright light. Leave one in the bathroom.
Don’t experiment with electrical devices especially if you’re traveling abroad where voltage requirements might be different from in the States. If in doubt, ask staff to guide you. They’ll let you know if what you’re planning to use is compatible with their electrical circuitry.

Depending on the duration of your trip, bring along a rope or a clothesline, some laundry detergent powder and clothespins. The clothesline can be used to hang clothes after a quick wash in the bathroom. This way you don’t have to cart along luggage loads of clothes for your kids. By doing a couple of quick wash cycles in the bathroom, you can get away with packing fewer changes of clothes for your kids.

Make Security Clearance a Breeze

In these days of hyper airport security, the rules have changed, and getting through security can be a patience testing process. Add to this, the hassles of traveling with kids, and you have a challenging procedure ahead.

Make sure you’re on the proper page regarding what you can take on board the flight. Prohibited items don’t just include weapons and inflammatory items, but also liquids and some other items that may be essential in your carry on luggage. Check out the Transport Security Administration website to be updated on the list of items you can take aboard, especially the liquids allowed. Check for shampoos, liquid soaps, toothpaste and other essentials that you might not think twice about before packing in your bag. Remember, the point is to breeze through security as quickly as possible to avoid making your kids edgy and anxious. The lesser prohibited items you have in your bag, the faster you’ll be on the plane.

Make sure your kids don’t wear anything that contains metal, like the buckles on their belts. That goes for other members of your family.

If your kids are old enough to understand, explain the security procedure to them before you get to the airport. Kids are liable to find the whole shoe removing procedure quite puzzling. Explain that it’s only a temporary thing, and that you will get your shoes back.

Explain to them that their personal stuff like their bag, blanket and stuffed toy will also be put through an x ray machine. Reassure them, that they will get it back.

Tell your child before you leave for the airport not to make jokes about things like bombs and explosives. This is especially true for older kids who might want to fool around, not realizing the consequences for your family. You could be fined if your child plays pranks like this.

At the airport, see if you can find kid friendly lanes. These are specially equipped with cartoon and dinosaur mats, and other accessories to make kids more comfortable with the tedious screening process. Officers may even use hand puppets to entertain your child!

If you are traveling with more than one child, allow plenty of time before the flight to arrive at the airport. Check in times might be especially tedious when there are many younger kids involved.

Finally, even with the increased security, don’t make the entire procedure sound dangerous or frightening. It will only put your kdis off travel in the future.
